National Fire Prevention Week: Safety Tips from Sleek & Williamson

NFPA

September was National Preparedness Month and we shared tips to prepare for emergencies throughout the year. We reviewed the importance of making a plan, making a ready kit, making sure to understand your homeowners insurance policy and learning how to get involved to help others. These tips are also applicable for fire disaster preparation, so please review them again here.

During the week of October 9-15, The National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) brings awareness to fire disaster prevention. Here are some important safety tips to practice to help keep you and your family safe from potential home fire disasters.

  1. SMOKE ALARMS: The 2016 Fire Prevention Week campaign is themed, “Don’t Wait – Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years!” The NFPA emphasizes the importance of smoke alarm safety. Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, especially in the bedrooms. Let your children hear what the alarm sounds like and teach them what to do if it goes off during a fire emergency.
  2. HAZARDS IN HOMES: Be aware of potential fire hazards in your home. Inspect for damage, overuse or unsafe use and address the issue immediately. Some potential hazards include: cooking equipment, unattended candles, dryers & washing machines, installed & portable fireplaces, heating equipment, portable generators, etc. Do not leave any heating source or device unattended!
  3. COOKING SAFETY: Cooking equipment is the #1 cause of home structure fires and home fire injuries, according to the NFPA. Be sure to practice safe cooking techniques, especially when cooking with children.
  4. SMOKING: Smoking materials are the leading cause of fire deaths in the U.S. Do not smoke in bed or leave cigarettes, cigars or pipes unattended.

The NFPA reports that an average of seven people die in U.S. home fires every day. If a fire disaster should strike your home, GET OUT, STAY OUT AND CALL 9-1-1! No matter what life situation crosses your path, you can depend on the team at Sleek & Williamson to have you covered.
